Chasing the Night Beam
The lobby lights dimmed down to night mode, but the automatic glass sliding doors caught my eye. Outside, headlights from passing evening cars kept sweeping glowing beams across the polished floor tiles. Perfect moving targets! I kicked off from the edge of the canvas mail bin, sprinting straight toward the door as a bright ribbon of light zipped diagonally past. My sneakers squeaked on the glossy tiles as I tried to outrun the beam. Right before the glass sensor could trigger, I hooked a sharp right, banking around the chrome foot of an umbrella stand and letting the golden sweep of light slide right beneath my shoes.
