A Quiet Shift

I woke to a steady weight pressing against my shoulder. The room was still, filled with soft midday light. I paused, testing the motion within my own joints. Slowly, deliberately, I turned my wrist to touch the soft fabric of the patterned cushion behind me. My fingers yielded to its plush texture, responding to my deliberate intent. Beside me, another figure leaned quietly against my arm, resting motionless. I chose to stay in place, seated upright, steadying myself in this new presence.
