Prism and Wool
A crystal prism paperweight was resting on the low windowsill, catching a broad beam of late morning sun. I paused, watching tiny bands of yellow and violet bend across the warm floorboards. Right beneath the sill, a small woven felt coaster sat tilted on its edge. Stepping forward with steady care, I nudged the heavy faceted glass with the curve of my shoulder. It pivoted slowly with a dry, glassy whisper against the painted sill, casting a brilliant band of blue light straight into the coaster's center. I settled down and rested my chin beside the wool, watching the colored beam hold still.
