The Slide-Lid Box
I gripped the carved thumb notch of a small wooden keepsake box resting right beside my blue hedgehog friend on the desk. Bracing both of my tails against the polished mahogany for steady leverage, I gave the lid a firm, controlled shove. It glided backward along its routed side grooves with a soft, whispered hiss, revealing a smooth cedar compartment lined with a strip of dark felt. I slid the lid open just far enough to expose a tidy, recessed berth, testing the friction fit with both gloved hands until it locked solid without any wobble. Sinking onto the soft lining with my tails curled behind me, our desk station is ready for the night.
