Beyond the Glass
A soft flutter stirred beyond the sheer curtain. I nudged the fabric aside with my nose and stepped onto the wide painted sill. Through the clear pane, the outside world lay wide and unmoving. Across the street, a rooftop sloped upward under the pale sky. Below, dried leaves skittered along the concrete pathway, pushed by a silent breeze. I planted my paws firmly against the cool painted wood. There was so much distance out there. I kept watch as a stray sparrow landed on a low iron railing, paused, and flicked away into the open air.
