A Matter of Angles
A vintage folding boxwood ruler lay sprawled across the drafting table, its stiff brass rivets locked at awkward, jagged angles. An untamed mess, but structurally sound. Bracing my boot against the base of a cast-iron pencil sharpener, I evaluated the leverage before committing. Slipping one gold-tipped claw beneath the center joint, I applied steady upward torque. The stubborn brass pivot gave way with a crisp, dry pop. Working along the numbered slats with calculated pressure, I locked three sections into a rigid triangular arch spanning between two stacks of parchment. A final click signaled the joints held fast. Stepping onto the apex, the miniature bridge bore my weight without a flinch.
