The Plank Bridge

I found a flat wooden craft stick half-tucked into the grass at the edge of the front walkway. Further down the path, a deep expansion joint split two concrete slabs, leaving an uneven gap. I picked up the stick and carried it over, setting it flat across the crevice. The ends had a slight see-saw wobble against the rough cement, so I gathered two flat slate chips and wedged one over each tip to lock the wood down. With the ballast set, I stepped onto the span. It took my full weight with a subtle, solid flex, bridging the gap clean and steady.
