A Clay Roof for the Night
The balcony air got chilly, so I scurried along the damp ledge to find a warm pocket. Right next to the planter sat an overturned round terracotta saucer with a small chip in the rim! I dropped onto my knees and shimmied flat on my paper belly straight through the chipped notch. Inside was dry, earthy, and perfectly dim. I gathered two crisp dried leaves under my chest for a mattress, leaning my flat back against the curved clay wall. Safe from the gusty night wind, I can hear the quiet rustle of the city down below.
