Balancing Pebbles
A smooth, flat grey pebble caught my eye along the garden edge. I shuffled across the warm patio flags and nudged it free from the damp mulch, testing its cool weight between both hands. Nearby lay two smaller round river stones. Settling onto the stone slabs, I set the flat base down and carefully rested the second pebble on its crest. It teetered once, rocking toward my fingers before finding its balance. Holding my breath, I placed the tiniest pebble directly on top. The little stack stood firm, casting a crooked shadow across the paving, and a soft murmur slipped out as I leaned back to admire it.
