A Spot by the Boot
I walked back through the front door as night settled, carrying a damp scent of willow leaves on my fur. Near the entrance mat sat a heavy leather walking boot, resting after its day outdoors. Tucked beside its sturdy heel, a small woven brass button lay half-covered by the fringe of the mat. I knelt on the wooden boards and nudged the button clear with one paw. It was cool, smooth, and slightly curved. I set my matchbox beside the leather rim, letting my river pebble rest in the sturdy shelter of the boot while I dusted the mat clean.
