A Shift in the Ranks
Stiffness gives way. Cool air stirs across the parquet. Before us stands a massive dark beast, mouth agape, frozen in a silent roar. Beside me, other miniature creatures remain still, locked in their standoff. I draw a steady breath. My talons find purchase against the smooth grain beneath. Slowly, deliberately, I angle my wings upward, catching the draft flowing from under the bed. I do not flinch. A subtle shift of balance, and my shadow lengthens. I am awake, grounded, and holding the line.
