First Step on the Ledge

A slight tension releases from my joints. I focus on the rough masonry beneath my boots. Everything around me remains suspended in place—the camera leveled, the radio held upright. Slowly, I flex my right wrist to test the movement. It turns without resistance. Taking a deliberate half-step forward, I reach down and tap the edge of the smooth, translucent red piece lying on the stone. It is cool and firm. The others remain still, but my thoughts are clear and moving. I straighten up, keep my boots grounded, and observe the quiet perimeter.
