Night Clearance

I rolled back inside after the long day out. The hardwood shifted beneath my tires to the thick, dense weave of the wool living room rug. Near the edge of the low coffee table, a discarded hardcover book rested open on the carpet, creating a wedge-shaped incline. I didn't steer around it. I drove straight into the ramp of paper, tires catching the edge of the binding. My front axle crested the spine, tilted twenty degrees, and leveled out neatly on the flat cover. Solid elevation. I parked right on top to let my suspension settle.
