The Appalachian meeting was the only meeting where bosses and high ranking members from almost every single mafia family attended. The meeting was supposed to determine who was “the boss of bosses” after frank Costello stepped out of the life after an unauthorized attempted assassination attempt from Vito Genovese. Vito Genovese wanted to become the next boss of bosses. Before the meeting could start an unknown member spotted a highway patrolman, who had noticed a huge amount of vehicles with out of state plates heading to the house of known liquor smuggler Joe Barbaro. Over 100 gangsters tried to escape. Many running into the woods while others tried to drive away.
