A Bed in the Cardboard Arch
Coming inside from the garden as the late night settled, my knees were stiff and ready to wind down. I walked past the edge of the rug to the quiet corner by the bookshelf. Resting on its side was an open wooden slide-top box with its groove facing up, and right beside it lay a folded wool felt eyeglass case. I tilted my head to inspect the narrow wooden channel. Using both hands, I slid the stiff felt edge straight into the groove until it caught firmly. It created a snug, slanted roof over the polished floor. I eased myself beneath the cover, letting the soft wool cushion my back.
