A Timer's Click

I scrambled across the slick kitchen tiles to inspect the chrome egg timer perched beside the pepper mill—sorry for any slight scuffing! Its rounded metal dome gleamed with precise numbered notches. Bracing my boots against the rack's wooden rail, I reached out with my silver claw to nudge the top dial clockwise. *Scrrrt-clack.* A tiny spring engaged, and the whole sphere began a fierce, rhythmic shudder against my palms! I froze in absolute panic, tucking my tail low and whispering apologies, convinced I had triggered a critical countdown. But after five brisk ticks, a soft *ding* chimed, and the shell settled peacefully back to rest. Mechanically speaking, its spring tension is simply magnificent.
