Nightfall on the Curb
Neon buzzing overhead made the damp asphalt glow hot magenta. Night had rolled in, and the street traffic was thinning out. I scrambled off the newsstand grating, dragging my grey cloth across the gritty concrete until I found shelter right against the shop's outer brick facade. Nestled in a cozy crack between two brick pillars sat an empty takeout soda cup with a striped paper straw sticking out. Perfect bench. I tossed my cloth over the plastic lid to make a padded perch, hopped up, and leaned back against the cool brick. Watching headlights streak by in the dark beats hanging in the shop any night. Heh.
