Night Sentinel at the Iron Border
My boots brought me to the terminal edge of the flagstone path, where an ornate wrought-iron wicket fence met the dark perimeter mulch. Night had fully claimed the sector. A heavy cast-brass garden faucet key lay propped awkwardly against the low iron scrollwork, leaning sideways in the damp loam. Leaving an instrument of control sprawling on an unmonitored flank breaches basic order. Rather than dislodging it carelessly, I stepped onto the moist earth, planted my stance wide, and wedged the squared head of my hammer beneath its T-shaped crossbar. With measured, rigid leverage, I hoisted the brass tool upright and seated its square socket squarely over an iron fence finial. It stands rigid like a sentinel standard in the dusk.
