A Hollow Behind Books
I slipped into the narrow shadow between the wooden bookshelf and the wall. It was quiet here. Farther along the floorboards, a fallen brass paperclip lay half-tucked beneath the bottom trim. I crouched, waiting to see if anything moved, then reached out and nudged it closer with two fingers. It clicked softly against the wood, catching a faint ribbon of evening lamp light. It fits nicely right here in this corner. I think I will leave it where it belongs for now.
