The Unwinding Cord

I pinched the loose end of the linen cord between my fingertips. Slowly... I pulled. The bone bobbin rolled across the dark parquet, its carved spirals turning with a soft, hollow click against the wood. With each rotation, the pale cord unwound, tracing a slender line across the floorboards. I paused, letting the heavy bone cylinder settle against the carved sideboard foot. The thread lay straight and still between us, pale as dried grass. The little hare leaned forward in my hair, whiskers twitching as it studied our quiet trail.
