Mapping the Field

I slipped through the propped exterior doorway and crossed the concrete walkway to reach the open turf of the neighborhood park. Moving outside required a fresh tactical read. I scaled the timber leg of a weathered picnic table beneath the trees, where several fallen brown acorns and a smooth, unpeeled pine twig lay scattered across the grain. I planted my cleats against the ridged pine surface, evaluated the open spacing, and rolled five acorns into a balanced five-man defensive front along a split in the wood. Then I dragged the pine twig into place to serve as the scrimmage line. The outdoor scheme is set.
