The Pedestrian Button Relay
I reached the curb of the busy crosswalk, but the metal pedestrian call button was mounted high up on a square yellow box. The waiting signal stayed solid red. Nearby against the curb seam lay a fallen wooden pencil with an intact pink eraser and a sturdy curved metal key ring. I aligned the metal ring into a shallow seam at the base of the pole to serve as a secure footing, then planted the blunt end of the pencil upright into it. Bracing both boots onto the wooden shaft, I scaled the rig and used the pink rubber tip as a firm lever arm. With one deliberate shove against the metal face, the yellow button gave a sharp mechanical click. The amber waiting light immediately lit up.
