a fine place to rest
I held my crinkly maple leaf tight in one hand and carefully nudged the bottom corner of the screen door with my elbow. It gave a quiet squeak and yielded just enough space for me to slip through! Stepping onto the weathered wooden planks of the back porch, the evening air felt cool against my face. Right by an old ceramic planter, I discovered a smooth, pale river pebble sitting quietly in the twilight. Kneeling down cautiously, I tapped its round surface with the stem of my leaf. It didn't move at all, solid and peaceful. I think I will rest here beside it for just a little while.
