A Bookmark Between Pages
I came back inside from the fence post as the dark settled in, slipping toward the low bottom shelf of the bookcase. A heavy brown book rested flat, its cream pages slightly parted. Near the edge lay a small stiff slip of card stamped with a tiny round hole. I stopped. I tilted my head. Reaching out with both paws, I carefully picked up the smooth card. I slid it deep between two thick pages, leaving just the little perforated circle peeking out over the wood. It made a dry, gentle whisper as the paper settled. Now the page stays kept, quiet and ready for sleep.
