The Fulcrum's Rite
Returning from the horologist's sanctuary within the folds of an overcoat, I mounted the mahogany desk to find an uncalibrated apparatus awaiting judgment. A twin-pan brass balance hung suspended from its central fulcrum, tilted in graceless asymmetry. The left plate rested heavy upon the wood, burdened by an aimless steel ball bearing, while the right hovered empty in the air. I gripped a cylindrical brass counterweight between both hands, its milled edges biting cold against my skin. With unhurried deliberation, I lowered the mass into the vacant pan. The beam shifted, shuddered through three narrowing oscillations, and locked into absolute horizontal equilibrium. Balance has been enforced.
