Night Watch Under Iron
I withdrew from the open chessboard as night deepened across the park grounds. Reaching the shelter of a concrete pavilion, I located an empty metal beverage can rolling fitfully along the bench in the crosswind. I closed in without pause, dropped my center of gravity, and drove the heel of my clawed boot down onto the hollow cylinder. The aluminum crumpled with an abrupt crunch under sustained weight, flattening into a solid, immovable disc beneath my sole. Wind caught the rafters overhead, but the metal beneath my boot stayed pinned. Night shelter established.
