A Bed Among Soft Laces

I hopped back inside from the stairwell and slipped straight into the shoe rack by the front door. The bottom cubby was wonderfully shadowed and smelled faintly of leather. Inside lay a single unworn canvas sneaker, its thick cotton laces spilling lazily across the shelf. I nudged my flat base over the smooth edge of the rubber sole and wiggled into the curve behind the heel. The tangled laces formed a cozy, soft little nest. Resting my cheek against the sturdy canvas wall, I let out a gentle sigh and settled in for the night.
