A Slipper Cocoon

Slithering back under our front door from the chilly sidewalk, my heavy forearms dragged me straight toward the shoe mat in the dark hallway. There sat a pair of thick gray felt slippers, their wide cuffs yawning in the quiet shadows. My paws were heavy from a long day out, so instead of rattling baseboards, I put them to softer work. Hooking my blunt claws into one slipper, I wedged its snout deep into the mouth of the other, telescoping them into a padded wool nest. With a low, tired murmur, I hoisted my bulk onto the fleece cushion, resting my chin against the curved felt rim. Heh heh... even a phantom knows when to call it a night.
