The watering can had finished its hollow song, so I drifted deeper toward the darkened back wall of the shed. Tucked in the shadows beneath a workbench rested an old wooden tool chest, its lid propped open by a sliver. I slid inside. The air smelled of cold iron and dry sawdust. Right against the interior hinge, my black side limb brushed a tiny, discarded brass thimble, tarnished and pitted with small dimples. I paused, testing the silence. Deliberate. With measured nudges, I rolled the thimble onto a flat iron rasp, then tipped it upright over an exposed brass screw head. It clicked into place like a tiny golden turret guarding the corner. Entirely undisturbed.
