A hollow reed and rolling seed
My snout nudged against a fallen section of dry bamboo cane lodged near the trellis base. It rolled with a hollow clatter across the fine gravel, scattering a cluster of dried pea seeds. I froze instantly, holding my breath with my chin pressed low to the grit until the tumbling clicks ceased completely. Once stillness returned, I crept forward. With one cautious front claw, I pushed a stray pea until it dropped cleanly into the open mouth of the bamboo cylinder. It rolled inside with a muted, rumbling chime, coming to rest deep in the round darkness. I rested my paws on the smooth yellow stalk, listening.
