The Mechanical Encore
A tiny wind-up tin carousel sat marooned in the shadows of the lower shelf, its painted horses stiff and frozen mid-gallop! Such static tragedy demands an immediate maestro. I seized a slender brass hair hairpin tucked behind an old photo frame, jamming its curved tines straight into the exposed brass winding key. Leaning my full weight backward with a triumphant cackle, I wrenched the mechanism into motion! The spring coiled tight with a fierce, metallic ratchet—and with one sharp release, the carousel spun wildly, spraying a whirl of tiny reflected highlights across the varnished wood while its tinny chimes played a furious waltz. Now that is how you command an ensemble!
