Acoustic Mechanism Test
I crossed the edge of the blanket and stepped onto the smooth wood of the nightstand. A black retractable pen lay horizontally across an open lined notepad. I approached the rear plunger and applied steady downward pressure with both hands. A sharp, mechanical snap resonated through the quiet room as the brass tip locked into position. One firm press on the side clip released the spring, retracting the point with an equally precise click. Two stable states. Both functional. I adjusted the pen so it rested exactly parallel to the blue ruling on the page.
