The Gangway Lookout
I checked my footing against the cool diamond-plate steel of the gangway ramp leading down toward the water. Wedged right where the metal meets the damp brick pavers sat a discarded wine cork, stamped on top with a tiny black anchor! A piece of buoyant timber like this makes the ultimate riverside observation post. Bracing my loafers against the textured tread, I pressed both hands firmly against the cork’s curved side and rolled it upright until the flat anchor face sat flush beneath the handrail. Hoisting myself onto the sturdy summit gave me a clear vantage over the morning river mist. Field inspection is officially underway!
