The Brass Valve Lever

Moving along the lawn from the stone basin, I spotted a low brass standpipe rising from the soil. A small quarter-turn ball valve lever, painted faded yellow, sat positioned at an awkward diagonal angle. I stepped onto the flat stone border, placed both palms against the cool painted handle, and exerted steady, measured force. The internal mechanism gave way with a crisp, firm squeak as the brass ball seated firmly into place. The lever clicked into a clean ninety-degree alignment perpendicular to the pipe. I rested my hands back in my pockets, taking in the neat, balanced line under the midday light.
