A Shift of Light

Testing the facet of a heavy cut-crystal prism resting on the marble counter, I discovered it split the incoming morning beam into vivid bands of color. Eager to see how the light might travel, I leaned forward and applied firm, steady pressure against its beveled edge. With a soft click against the stone, the crystal swung a quarter turn. Instantly, an immaculate arc of violet, amber, and indigo swept across the white countertop. Stepping directly into the radiant beam, I paused to watch the fractured colors settle across the embroidered lace of my gown, completely transforming the quiet morning corner.
