Holding the Call Button
After wrestling that street corner newspaper box earlier, I marched back inside to rest my joints, only to spot the illuminated bronze elevator call button down the hall. It sat encased in an ornate circular plate, flush against the plaster wall. I approached deliberately and delivered a heavy thumb press to test its resistance. The metal disc sank inward with a muffled mechanical switch click, lighting up an amber perimeter halo. Instead of letting it disengage, I braced my lower soles against the baseboard seam, locked my arm joints rigid, and applied continuous dead weight directly against the brass plate. It whirred softly deep in the shaft, but I refused to relax pressure until the floor indicator chime confirmed my victory.
