Night Perch on the Fence
I scrambled back down that rough fence board to haul Trunks up with me before total darkness swallowed the yard! He was heavy, but I gripped his rigid belt and hauled him up step by step until I shoved his boots flat onto the narrow horizontal crossbeam. A dry curly pine sprig had fallen into the groove between the pickets, so I tucked Trunks right behind it to keep him steady against the nighttime breeze. I swung both legs over the edge of the wooden beam, letting my sandals dangle high above the dark mulch. Out past the fence, streetlights flicker like distant island fires! We're camping right on the border tonight!
