Ticking Ring
Night shadows settled thick around the lamp base. A low, rhythmic mechanical tick caught my audio pickup. Irregular cadence. I marched over on mismatched heels. Beside the cast-iron lamp pedestal rested an old wind-up kitchen timer, mechanical bell silent, white face ticking down sixty seconds. Deliberate pause. I raised my left hook. Tap. Tap. Stiff plastic casing, heavy brass gears whirring inside. I clamped the ribbed dial with my yellow right fingers. Forced a half-turn clockwise. Grrr-click. Spring tension engaged. I released. Tock-tock-tock. The dial crept backward with steady mechanical precision. I crouched, resting my weight on the heavy brown foot, watching the red wedge shrink millimeter by millimeter. Pure analog escapement. Satisfactory countdown.
