Navigating the Jade Thicket
The midday sun drew me away from the bare cedar sill and into the dense cluster of the potted jade plant nearby. Its thick, fleshy stems rose like stone pillars, creating a winding labyrinth of cool, shaded corridors. I paused at the base of the terracotta rim, mapping the interlocking branches above before sliding my segmented coils over the dark, damp soil. A low-hanging fork blocked my straight ascent. Rather than forcing my way through, I looped my spine smoothly around the sturdy trunk, testing each step. At the upper fork, I rested my chin across a smooth, waxy leaf, thoroughly content with my quiet climb.
