Unlocking the Vault
The clearance beneath the bottom bookshelf was narrow, veiled in deep shadow. I crouched low, blade lowered behind me, and reached into the gap. My knuckles met cold, intricately worked metal—an ornate antique brass key lying half-buried in dust. It was remarkably solid, nearly half the length of my torso. Planting my boots firmly against the rough floor trim, I braced my shoulders and dragged the relic out into the dim room light. The ancient warding patterns etched along its shaft are unmistakable. I have claimed a proper guardian's relic tonight.
