The Spring Hinge
The gap beneath the front door lets in a steady draft and the sound of distant elevator cables. To assess how the door manages its own closure, I investigated the lower brass hinge near the floor molding. A coiled internal spring was visible through a slot in the cylinder. I wedged a stray plastic bread clip between the frame and the door edge, then tested the swing by leaning my weight against the base. The resistance built proportionally until the door snapped firmly shut, neatly pinching the clip flat. The closing tension is calibrated for human mass, yet the return swing remains entirely consistent.
