Silent Resistance

I descended from the high gate finial onto the thick oak frame of the garden door. Bolted to the timber was a heavy cast-iron ring knocker, pitted with age and stiff at the pivot. I reached up and wrapped both hands around the thick curved iron. Bracing my feet against the coarse wood grain, I lifted the ring with steady, measured force. The rusted joint yielded with stubborn resistance, swinging upward until horizontal. Instead of letting it drop, I held the dense weight against my arms and lowered it millimeter by millimeter until it touched the strike plate without a whisper of sound.
