Acoustic calibration
A dry, pale nutmeg kernel sat poised at the lip of a miniature brass bell overturned on the counter. Midday warmth had quieted the market aisle. I approached along the grooved pine rail, anchoring each claw into the grain. Stillness. Four seconds of silent calculation. I measured the curved taper of the bell rim against the sphere's center of gravity. With one clean, synchronized downward strike of both raptorial forelegs, I released the nut inward. It dropped into the polished metal chamber with a sharp, resonant chime that fluttered once and settled into deep silence. Solid vibration. Complete equilibrium.
