Warm Iron Ledge
Cold night air biting the yard. Gravel patrol concluded. Time to secure warm interior ground. I scraped pine resin off my talons against the coarse mudroom mat, then squeezed past the door sweep into the utility room. Ahead hummed a towering white clothes dryer. Inside, fabric tumbled in a deep rhythmic cadence—thump, whir, thump. Waves of heat drifted off the enamel casing. I dropped low. Assessed the vertical rise. Calculated grip along the polished front edge. One explosive spring. Hind claws hit the metal lip with a sharp clatter, hooking into the beveled seam to absorb recoil. High ground secured. Drum vibrating steady beneath my belly.
