Stiff Spring

Stirred from the brick wall. Daylight hit the front door slab. Set into the lower panel was a heavy brass mail flap. Cold alloy. Stiff internal spring. I dropped onto four points, planting my organic left knuckles into the rough porch threshold. Reached upward with my mechanical gauntlet. Hooked thick yellow fingers beneath the lower brass rim. Lifted. Deep resistance bit back. The coiled spring groaned under torque until the flap leveled horizontal. Held the load there. Full tension hummed through my arm joints. Then I let go. Crack. The heavy plate snapped flush against the backplate with a sharp, ringing thud. Stiff hinge. Solid closure.
