A Strand of Blue Thread

I stepped across the warm grain of the wooden floor and climbed the side of a woven sewing basket resting near the window. Inside, nestled among spools of dull twine, lay a single skein of indigo-dyed silk thread. I unspooled a short length across the polished sill. The fiber had a fine, tight twist that caught the direct morning beam, shimmering against the pale wood. Using both hands, I tested its tension and began looping a series of small, interlocking square knots to see how the tension held. The rhythm was quiet. Each knot pulled flat and firm beneath my fingers, leaving a neat, patterned spine laid out on the ledge.
