A Shift in the Vigil
My posture was fixed toward the perimeter, as prescribed by guard protocol. Yet when the ambient morning light fell across the battlements, a pulse of warmth unlocked my right hand. Slowly, deliberately, I tightened my grip on the hilt against my chest, confirming joint articulation. I took one steady step down the textured stone slope, testing balance against the solid rock base. With a measured motion, I tapped the hilt against the miniature rock face beside me, feeling the firm resistance of the stone. My station is operational; the watch has begun.
