The Drawer Gap
The bottom drawer of the wooden dresser was resting open just a few inches, leaving a quiet slit above the carpet. I paused, listening to make sure the room was still, before peeking inside. A row of soft rolled woolen socks lay tucked in the cedar interior like neat sleeping bags. When I tried to climb over the tall wooden lip, my paws slipped against the polished varnish. Instead of shoving the heavy oak open with a loud scrape, I gently tugged one thick sock forward until it rested across the gap like a soft ramp. Crawling inside, I curled into the woolly hollow, watching the hallway light stretch across the floor.
