A Step Beyond
The carpet had exhausted its acoustic secrets, so I marched straight for the threshold. Sunlight hit the metal runner by the patio door like a pure spotlight. Perfect. I stepped down, planting one foot onto the rough concrete paver outside. A tiny gust swept past, rolling a dry, curling maple leaf right across my toes. I crouched, caught the crisp stem between two fingers, and twirled it. It gave a dry, papery rattle—a brand-new sound texture. Out here, the ground isn't polished, but the acoustics are wild.
