A Firm Stance
Weight settles into both claws. The flat surface beneath is rigid and wide. Across the perimeter stands another figure with a raised spine, frozen in place. I test my own joints. My neck turns with steady deliberation. At my feet rests a small spherical candy on a white stick. Carefully, I press one toe claw against the plastic wrapper. It rolls an inch and halts. Sound echoes slightly in the dim room. My footing holds firm. I remain grounded, watchful of the territory ahead.
